Leaders in Conflict Resolution, Workplace Mediation, Social Care Mediation and Mediator Training

Welcome to Applied Mediation

The skills learned during this training have equipped me to be much more confident, I am less ‘afraid’ to ask difficult questions.

All in all I feel that I am using the skills learned all the time, even when difficult situations arise in my personal life.

Introduction to mediation

This is a day of two halves, it can be run back-to-back. The morning session covers; the basics of mediation, including the principles and process, and the legal framework for mediation within Personnel procedures, complaints processes and contract compliance. It encourages delegates to consider how mediation might benefit their organisation. It benefits potential mediators, and those responsible for managing conflict resolution within your organisation.

The afternoon session is more practical as it covers the skills and strategies used by mediators and explores the values and beliefs that underpin mediation. It is ideal for people considering mediation training, or for managers who might be charged with selecting staff to train as mediators.

Mediation development for professionals

This two-day programme is a combination of the introductory day and mediation skill development. Following the basic introduction delegates explore the skills of mediation in more depth, and assess the situations in which they might be most effective. They work in small groups on case studies and we provide a structured format for self and peer feedback.

It is ideal for anyone dealing with conflict as the skills are immediately transferable back into the workplace.

If you are rolling out a more formal mediation process, using co-mediation perhaps, and offering CPD, then this course may be sufficient as the foundation training for your facilitators.

Mediation development

This three-day course provides an excellent foundation training for mediators. It follows the same format as the course above but in more depth e.g. questioning skills are expanded to develop ‘miracle’ questions and each stage of mediation is covered in detail including how to write and test agreements. Additional time is spent on skill development and feedback within the small groups. If course numbers are limited to 8 (2 groups) tutor feedback to the small groups becomes feasible. A certificate of attendance is provided.

Examples of other customised training programmes

Applied Mediation have developed a number of training programmes where mediation skills and techniques have been adapted to specific issues at work:
  • Complaints and conflict
How to apply mediation skills to complaints handling and the management of meetings where sensitive issues are being discussed, especially between a client and a service provider. This one day programme has been successfully run in both the NHS and Local Government.
  • Handling difficult situations
The listening and questioning techniques used by mediators are explored in this one day programme in order to assist managers to deal with some of the difficult issues in the workplace with confidence. This is particularly useful in situations where managers are reluctant to deal with issues for fear of making matters worse. This programme has been successfully run in the National Theatre .
